Deutsche Telekom and Vodafone to deploy VPN services via SDN and NFV
Tue 13 Oct 2015
Following a successful trial earlier in the year, Deutsche Telekom has announced that it will be expanding its SDN-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) services.
Vodafone Group PLC is also planning to launch its own VPN service across a variety of global markets in the near future.
Deutsche Telekom originally announced launched the pilot for this system earlier in the year at March’s Mobile World Congress. The group announced that it would be investing more than $6 billion, with a view to a Europe-wide network expansion by 2018.
SDN (Software Defined Networking) is used to form network overlays between multiple enterprise locations while NFV (Network Function Virtualisation) is used over multiple locations and allows users to communicate securely over a period of time.
The trial run met with positive feedback when piloted in Croatia, Hungary and Slovakia, the first three of ten countries to be selected. The process allowed these countries to draw products from one standardised platform.
The company’s VPN service portfolio is offered as a Cloud-managed IT solution on a monthly subscription basis. It includes firewall and web security, branch, site-to-site and remote access encrypted VPNs. It allows customers easy selection, subscription and activation of a secure and scalable internet service. The fixed-network transmission speed will eventually increase to 500Mbits per second.
Axel Clauberg, DT’s vice president of aggregation, transport, IT and fixed access said that the cloud-based production model would enable customers to self-service and take control around the offer without having to go through a lengthy procurement and ordering process.
While a specific time-frame hasn’t as yet been announced, Vodafone’s head of virtualisation, SDN and NFV, David Amzallag said that the company was determined to reach only single VPN product worldwide. By supporting the same service over a range of different markets, the end result is a simplified operation.
Mr Amzallag suggested that Vodafone is planning the development of a service orchestration platform that will be fully based on SDN and NFV.
